The Meditarranean spirit
The proportion, balance and serenity of Subirachs' first works connect with the work of his master, the nineteenth-century sculptor, Enric Casanovas. Certain remeniscences of rotundity and fullness of forms in works such as Mediterranean Woman have remained constant in many of his creations in subsequent periods. This free-standing sculpture preserves Mediterranean forms and subjects. The reclining nude female with sinuous curves, shows slightly elongated forms. The position of the body and the features denote repose and serenity. The piece as a whole oozes sensuality, balance and fertility of the Meditarranean woman. The following year Subirachs began to distort the forms of the human figure, thus commencing the path towards abstraction (compare Meditarranean Woman with Europe from 1950 and Europe from 1953).
